Recent Happenings

I don’t have a formal post but thought I’d check in! We moved last weekend so it’s been all consuming. We went from 1400 square feet to 2400 square feet so we have much more space and need to fill a few empty rooms. Unpacking with a 10 month old is challenging but I’ve been keeping him entertained with random boxes and Tupperware, and doing most of the unpacking during his naps.

We renovated our new house so I plan on doing a full post of before and after pics and survival tips for anyone doing a renovation.

We are currently just unpacking and putting together our new furniture. It’s fun but also I just want it all done!

Setting up furniture requires wine! Haha

Ive been enjoying homemade cookies a little too much lately. They are just so delicious straight out of the oven.

My brother’s best friend got married and I got to be my mom’s plus one. It was so fun and I just love weddings! The whole night was just beautiful!

Jim made a yummy dinner of pasta with meatballs and we had a delicious bottle of wine from Kamen wines in Sonoma. It was a nice way to end the weekend. I got to take home a centerpiece from the wedding and I’m obsessed with it! I aspire to be able to create flower arrangements like this!

Finally, we got our first real tree this year. It was really fun to pick it out and it smells amazing!

I hope you had a great weekend!

Healthy Football Snacks

Football season is upon us! Jim is OBSESSED with football. He literally will watch every game on tv if he can. I am becoming more of a football fan as the years go by because it is always on at our house. My favorite part of football is the food- wings, chips and dip, and beer. Yum! However, eating like this on a regular basis isn’t the best idea. Here are some of my favorite healthy football snacks!

Veggies and Dip

I love some good old fashioned celery, carrots, tomatoes, peppers, broccoli or cauliflower cut up to dip into low fat ranch. You get the crunch without the calories.

Pita chips and dip or salsa

Pita chips are usually a healthier alternative to regular chips, and salsa is a healthy option as well. Chobani Meze Dip is a new healthy dip that is low in calories – 25 for 2 tablespoons, and high in taste! With flavors like chili lime and roasted red pepper, these are a crowd pleaser. You wouldn’t even know they are healthy!

Apples and Caramel Dip

Nothing says fall and football season more than Carmel apples! By cutting up apples and dipping them into caramel dip, you save calories over eating a traditional caramel apple.

100 Calories

During my pregnancy, especially in my third trimester, my workouts have changed drastically.  It was actually, one of the things I was most surprised about.  I thought I would be one of those pregnant ladies who kept up the same or similar workouts for the whole 9 months.  I was wrong!  I had to listen to my body and care for my baby and dial my workouts WAY back.  I used to be an avid hot yoga sculpt student, and loved running half marathons. I was used to pushing my body to the max, and I loved it!  This was a big change for me!  Throughout my pregnancy, I knew I had two choices:  throw all of my previous hard work out and eat whatever I wanted, or be healthy and moderate, in different ways than in the past. In general, I think I have done a pretty good job of being healthy and moderate.  Yes, I eat dessert everyday!  But that doesn’t mean I have lost all self control.  In terms of workouts, I decided to go with the matra that “something is better than nothing”.  There are so many ways to add or subtract 100 calories in a day . Hungry at 3 pm?  There are tons of snacks that are around 100 calories.  Too tired or time crunched for a full workout?  There are plenty of ways to burn 100 calories.  Here are some of my favorite ways to burn 100 calories, and some of my favorite 100 calorie snacks!

15 Minutes of Weight Lifting

Some mornings I wake up and feel pretty much like I’ve been hit by a train I’m so tired!  While it is SO tempting to go back to bed a little longer, or just go for the coffee, I oftentimes do a small workout.  Squats, lunges, planks, bicep curls, triceps, and rows are my usual go-to exercises.  It just takes 15 minutes to do these, and I feel like I’m keeping up my strength, as well as moving a bit.

20 Minutes of Yoga

Yoga has been my godsend this pregnancy.  I obviously have always been a yoga lover (hence the name of my blog!!) but of course had to change around the type of yoga I do.  While I miss a sweaty, hot, yoga sculpt class, I have turned to prenatal yoga to get the same benefits. I still feel the burn, get a good stretch, and feel mentally calm at the end.  I try to do 30-40 minutes, but sometimes even 20 does the trick!

30 Minutes of Walking

When the weather isn’t horrible (Chicago has been lucky enough to have plenty of mild days this winter) Jim and I make it a point to go outside after dinner for a walk.  We both have fitness trackers (Fitbit for me, and Garmin Vivo Fit for him), and it is fun to try t get all our steps in in a day.  Walking has so many benefits, and it always makes me feel less full and bloated after dinner.  Sometimes we go on longer walks, but always aim for at least a half hour.  It is always fun to check out the neighborhood and catch up on our day together.

Cheese and Apple

I like pretty much all cheese!  I usually have a string cheese or a Babybel cheese and an apple as an afternoon snack to tide me over before dinner.

A container of Greek yogurt is a powerhouse for protein and calcium (which pregnant mamas need lots of!) and keeps me full for a long time.  I love adding a little cereal or granola to it to make it more exciting.I always gravitate towards Greek yogurt because it is all natural.  Other yogurts are loaded with sugar and preservatives.  I love the new Chobani Simply 100 Crunch because it is low in calories, and the crunch adds a fun, yummy addition to the snack.  Chobani Simply 100 has lots of really interesting information and even compares 3 types of 100 calorie yogurt.

Chips and Salsa

My other favorite afternoon snack is chips and salsa.  I always pick a natural, healthy version of a tortilla chip, and there are so many yummy varieties of salsa.  All you have to do is watch the portions, as they can quickly get to be massive with this delicious snack!

What I Ate Wednesday

It’s been a really long time since I’ve made one of these posts! The reason is that I literally eat the same thing every day when I’m at school. My lunch is always a pita with peanut butter and honey, a green salad, and a Luna bar, followed by an apple for a snack later. I will make a post next week showing a whole day of weekday eats. This week I stayed home on Tuesday because I was feeling a little under the weather, and I had a doctors appointment so I decided to document all of my food since it was a little more interesting than a school day.

For breakfast I had oatmeal with peanut butter and craisins and didn’t take a pic. Then some coffee and kitty cuddling.

For lunch there weren’t many options in the fridge so I made scrambled eggs with salsa, toast, and fruit salad.

I was still hungry so I had a Luna bar. I think I’m addicted!

Later I had a yogurt.

Jim made a quick dinner- chicken, veggies, rice, and one leftover coconut shrimp with soda water to drink.

Jim had a potluck at work so he was baking cookies. I couldn’t resist, and had maybe even a few more than this picture shows 😉 along with skim milk.

Those are all my eats for the day! I hope your week is flying by!

Friday night Jim and I went to dinner at Fountainhead. Fountainhead is one of our favorite local spots, and in the summer they have an amazing rooftop. Fountainhead is located in North Center in Chicago. They serve American fare that always has a fun twist. Their beer menu is extremely large and rotates regularly based on many things, including the season. They also have plenty of cocktails and a large wine list. Although I wasn’t partaking in the drink menu this time, I was happy to order a yummy mocktail.  Jim ordered a beer but I don’t remember what it was! I know it was a sour beer though… One of his favorite types of beer at the moment. The lighting wasn’t very good for picture taking!

We started wth the pub cheese as an appetizer and it was delicious!

After the appetizer, we browsed the menu. I was already starting to get full so I didn’t want a huge meal. I decided to go with the mussels and frites. Jim got fried chicken with mashed potatoes. Both were excellent! I really loved Jim’s mashed potatoes. I would order the chicken in the future just to get those potatoes!

Pub Cheese

Fried chicken and potatoes

In the past, we would have stayed for more drinks, but times have changed, so we headed home and watch Interstellar.  All in all, a good Friday night!

Some recent eats

Here are some recent meals we have had! Since I’ve gotten a little more adjusted to my new schedule I got the urge to do a little cooking and meal planning lately.

Lobster bisque soup and a salad. Costco for the win! I can’t claim that I made this delicious, decadent soup.
Cucumber with tomatoes from the garden.
Healthy homemade chili- just two types of beans, ground beef, chili powder, diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, garlic and onions. Such a good fall comfort dish! I made cornbread muffins to go with but forgot to take a picture!

Jim made chicken with fingerling potatoes and more tomatoes from the yard. Plus a take and bake bun from the store.

My favorite pumpkin bread from Starbucks. I definitely don’t eat this on a regular basis for breakfast but it was so worth it!
One more fall treat- a pumpkin cupcake- this was amazing!  That’s what happens when a pregnant lady goes grocery shopping hungry!

I had a busy week and was totally exhausted every night, dozing off before 9:00 every night. My back, legs and feet hurt like crazy. Standing all day is rough with a baby on board! I was more than happy to have a low key weekend with just a few plans. Our weekends have been, and will be jam packed, and while it is fun, it is also exhausting!

Here are some eats and some highlights from the weekend!
Friday morning I treated myself to a pumpkin spice latte- skim with one pump of syrup. I don’t like all the sugar flavor of the regular ones so I just get one pump.

  Brown rice and veggie salad.
Friday night we got carry out from a Mexican/Asian place that we have never tried before.  I chose a California role but this was what I got— not what I was expecting! It was veggies wrapped up in the seaweed wrapper.

To salvage the dinner Jim made cookies!

Saturday I had my friend Huda’s wedding shower. It was fun to see all of my friends and celebrate the bride!

Sunday we went to Jim’s favorite place on earth… Costco! We got a rotisserie chicken for lunch and had a salad with it.

Finally, Sunday night we had ribs on the grill that Jim made. So good! I has about 1/4 of my portion. Then we ended the weekend by going to the movies to see Black Mass.

And just like that, the weekend was over!

Some eats this week

I’m not going to do a what I ate Wednesday post because my weekday lunches and breakfasts are incredibly monotonous when school is in session. Overnight oats, salads, hummus, string cheese, etc. I thought it would be more fun to share some of my good meals from the past week!

Alaskan king crab legs and asparagus. So delicious and decadent!

Chicken tacos
Fresh tomatoes from the yard… Can’t get enough of them!

I’ve had other good meals but have failed to take pics of them.  I’m determined to get better at photographing my life for the blog!!

What I Ate Wednesday

Happy Wednesday everyone! Here is everything I ate yesterday. It is a bit random, as I started back at work. Also, I’ve been feeling extremely full and having some tummy issues lately, so I’m trying to eat small amounts more often throughout the day.

I couldn’t resist this pumpkin oatmeal at the store! It is good and I added some cinnamon on top! But I am going to make my own, healthier version soon.

A half a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

Delicious La Croix and string cheese.

Love these Kind bars
We were out of groceries so I had an oj to get in some fruit.

A tomato from our yard… Something about home grown tomatoes is so much better and different than tomatoes from the store.

My friend gave me these and I can’t stop eating them! They are so so good!

Because we were out of groceries we went to the store to replenish our stock. Since it was dinner time, we just got some to go options there. Salad bar!
California roll with cream cheese and brown rice.

Linking up with!

Friday Peaks of the Week #2

Saying goodbye to summer!

It’s been a busy week getting ready for school! I can’t believe summer is over and school is starting! I went into my classroom a few times this week, and also tried to enjoy my last few days of summer, and my last few days off EVER where I only had to worry about myself and could nap and read a book in bed if I wanted! I watched my fill of HGTV, The Real Housewives, online shopped, and read a lot of good books this summer. While I will miss it, I am excited to get back into a routine, and meet my new kids!

Listening to my body

I have been super hungry this week and yesterday was so hungry at 10:30 that I ate either a second breakfast, or an early lunch of peanut butter and honey on toast. It has been pretty fun to not worry about counting calories or if this was in my “plan” for the day. I have always been good about listening to my body, even before pregnancy, but have been even better about it now. If I’m hungry, it is for a reason, and I need to eat! I have been eating very healthy, and always make sure I have lots of fruits and veggies and dairy in my diet. I have also let myself indulge in a daily dessert- a few pieces of dark chocolate, gelato, or sometimes a more decadent dessert out at a restaurant. I don’t feel guilty at all about this because I eat well and stay active so I know I’m doing everything I can to help the baby grow and be healthy!  Earlier this week I had been forcing myself to get up at 5 and stop taking a nap to try to get ready for my school schedule. I was doing a million things and was super tired. Coupled with restless sleep at night, I ended up with a huge headache on Thursday. I took this as a cue to chill out and relax. In a few days I won’t have a choice and will have to power through my days, but for now, I should listen to my body and sleep when I’m tired, and take it easy when I have the chance!

Cuddly cat

The weather was quite fall-like in Chicago this week, which meant my cat Penny was super cuddly. Even when I was trying to type on the computer or needed to get up, she wanted to still be on my lap. I’ll take all the cuddles I can get!

Easiest dinner in the world

I whipped up a super fast and healthy dinner this week for us. I got a pound of cooked shrimp from the grocery store and stir fried it with a bag of frozen stir fry veggies and a bit of soy sauce. I served it over brown rice- the Uncle Ben’s 90 second rice. It came together in a flash, and was tasty and healthy!

Pottery Barn Baby

Somehow I got this catalogue in the mail without signing up for it. I normal would be annoyed and toss this type of mail, but I LOVE Pottery Barn and Pottery Barn Kids, so I was super excited to look at all of the beautiful things and start thinking about our nursery!
