My cousin Michelle threw me a shower over winter break and I’m just now getting around to posting about it! All of the showers were so fun and we felt so blessed! The decorations for baby showers are endlessly cute!!
During week 39, I had my final doctor appointment (unbeknownst to me)! My doctor said there was no progress happening and we talked about my 40 week appointment, and getting induced at 41 weeks. My doctor told me to walk a lot, so on Saturday we walked miles and miles running errands and meeting friends for dinner. I left feeling frustrated and feeling like I would be pregnant forever. I decided that Friday would be my last day of work (2 days before my due date) and had a feeling that I would be home with no baby, not working for at least a few days. I wanted to give my kids some closure and have a set day to leave, so Friday night I stayed till 6 pm making sure everything was ready for my departure.
Total weight gained
I’m not positive but I think it was 28 pounds.
Week 39 Symptoms
Stomach problems galore, sore back, sore groin area, and so tired.
During my last week at school, the teachers gave me a big bin of books and a gift card. On my last day my kids showered me with gifts. It was so unexpected and nice!
And that’s it! It’s bittersweet to know that my pregnancy is done but now I have a little snuggle bug sleeping in my lap as I type this, which is way better than being pregnant!
I have done a horrible job of making updates lately, and haven’t taken any pictures since Christmas! Oops! Going back to work was actually really hard, and I have been just getting through each day as best I can lately.
At 38 weeks, baby is the size of a watermelon. He weighs between 6 and 8 pounds. He is 19-21 inches long.
Total gained so far: 27 pounds at 38 weeks
I still have tons of Braxton Hicks but now know they are just what my body does. My back hurts a lot. Still plenty of heartburn. Insomnia like crazy. I had a headache at 38 weeks (more details below) Typing this out makes it sound so horrible, but really, I’m just excited and ready to meet baby!
We finished our registry after our final shower (shower post coming soon!) and now we are all ready!
Week 35-38 Milestones
I have had 3 ultrasounds in the past few weeks!!! Crazy! I had one because I had only gained 4 pounds in 7 weeks, so they wanted to make sure the baby was growing enough. The week after that ultrasound, I gained a bunch of weight in one week, so I guess I just caught up quickly! I had one at 37 weeks, because the doctor wasn’t sure if the baby was breech or not. He is head down and ready to go! I had one last week to check my amniotic fluid, which actually is very plentiful. Phew! Since none of these were very alarming, it was just fun to see him again. He is so squished, that it wasn’t like the 20 week ultrasound where I could see his whole body. All I could see were body parts and his profile. It is still the coolest thing ever to see him! I had my 38 week appointment and had a headache at the appointment, so I told my doctor about it. She was a little concerned about it, as this isn’t typical late in pregnancy. After my appointment, she sent me to the hospital, and i had to get blood drawn and wait for 2 hours to make sure everything was fine. It was, thankfully! My headache went away the next day, and I took a day off to rest and make sure it went away fully.
I’m DYING to meet our baby! I’m also looking forward to having a glass of wine and some raw sushi within the next month!
Just finishing up this pregnancy and getting ready to be a mom! In some ways I am in shock that we will have our lives turned upside down soon, and be responsible for a tiny human. In other ways, I am so excited and ready for motherhood. It was fun to make all the last minute preparations, and pack my back for the hospital.
I haven’t taken a picture in a while, but this is from my baby shower a few weeks ago.
Baby is the size of a honeydew melon. He weighs between 4.2 and 5.8 pounds. He is 17-18 inches long.
Total gained so far: 21 pounds
Week 34- 0 pounds
I have had a lot of heartburn. But this week was a little different. I have had Braxton Hicks for a while now, but this week they increased by a lot. I had been having between 2 and 5 every hour and called the doctor a few times. I finally ended up going into the hospital on Wednesday night. They put me on the monitors and I was having small contractions. They checked me and I was a half centimeter dilated. We ended up having to stay until 12:30 am. I went to my regular doctor the next day and she told me to stay off my feet, no exercise, and to try to stay in and rest as much as possible. Hopefully this little guy won’t make an early debut!
None other than just being a first grade teacher!
Oh so many! I started getting a little worried that our baby might come before we planned, so we bought some bare necessities that I was holding off on like diapers, and newborn outfits. I also bought some things for myself to wear post baby.
Week 34 Milestones
Nothing too noteworthy, but I started tracking contractions. It makes me excited/scared for when I really will be having contractions and getting ready for delivery.
Looking forward to:
Meeting the baby! I just wish I knew when exactly that will be! And of course looking forward to Christmas this week with our families!
Nothing very fun this week…I was a little more scared/stressed than excited this week. But I have a feeling that after all this, he will be late and I will have to be induced.
As my time being pregnant is coming to a close in a month and a half, I was thinking about what I like about pregnancy, and what I am excited for post-pregnancy. Here is my list so far!
Things I Will Miss
Going to the Movies
Jim and I have made it a point to go to the movies throughout this pregnancy because we know that once we have a baby we probably won’t go very often. When we have a babysitter, it will most likely be for an event, or to get dinner and drinks. It is so fun going to the movies! We went to a Saturday afternoon showing of The Hunger Games this weekend, and it felt so luxurious to sit in the dark theater all afternoon and eat Snow Caps!
I can’t say that I sleep well now…that is already a thing of the past. However, I do love the luxury of taking a weekend nap whenever I feel like it.
I have made it a point to take longer-than-usual showers for the past few days, because I have a feeling I will be in and out in no time once the baby is here.
Just the Two of Us
I know that our lives will forever be changed, and it will never just be “Julia and Jim” again. I am trying to savor these last weeks as a couple before we officially become a family.
It is a surreal feeling to have a baby constantly kicking and moving inside. I know I will definitely miss feeling him doing karate moves all the time!
I will still have dessert, but not every day, and not guilt free!
Never again will we have this type of excitement! I am terrified and so excited at the same time. I have no idea what life will be like with a newborn, and I just want it to be here now! All of the planning, researching, googling, and shopping is a once in a lifetime experience and I will definitely miss this special time. We will hopefully have more children in the future, but this is the only time that everything will be completely new.
Things I am Looking Forward To
Seeing What He Looks Like
I am dying to see his face ! Will he look like me? Will he look like Jim? A combination? I can’t wait to find out!
No explanation needed!
Again- no explanation needed. I have a small cup of coffee every morning, but can’t wait for a bigger cup, and an afternoon pick me up sometimes.
Oh how I miss a sweaty, butt kicking workout. I can’t wait to go back to hot yoga and go for a run!
I can’t wait for raw fish again! I have made do with California rolls and shrimp tempura rolls but can’t wait for a good old rainbow roll!
Being a Mom
I know that taking care of a newborn will be incredibly hard, but I am ready for the challenge. I can’t wait to be responsible for a tiny human, and throw myself into motherhood.
Being a Family of 3
I can’t wait to be a little family, and watch our son grow and flourish!
This past weekend we had two baby showers. My friends had planned a surprise couples shower, and without knowing, my mom had planned a friend shower for me, so we ended up having two showers with my friends!
We started the festivities off at Tango Sur an Argentinean steak house that is BYOB. It was slammed, so we were really glad we had reservations! My awesome friends each brought a book for a mini present on Saturday night, and then they also came to the other shower on Sunday. It was so fun to catch up with everyone and enjoy a delicious dinner. Everyone headed out to a bar afterwards, but Jim and I went home and watched Iowa lose in the Big Ten Championship.
Sunday we headed to the burbs for my official friend shower! My mom and aunt worked so hard to make everything perfect! It was so fun to see old friends and talk about all things baby. It was also so fun to reminisce about our wilder, single days too. Some of my friends drove all the way out from the city, and one of my friends even came with her one month old. I felt very loved, and so lucky to have such a great group of friends for so many years!
I haven’t posted a pregnancy update in a while now! Here is week 31!
Baby is the size of a winter squash (not sure what that really is!) and is between 15-17 inches long. He weighs between 2.5 and 4 pounds
Total gained so far: 20 pounds
Week 31- 1 pound
I caught a cold at the end of the previous week and it lingered around for this week. Each morning when I woke up, I barely had a voice, and kept coughing at night. Other than that, my back is still painful but I’m managing it the best I can, with physical therapy, yoga, and wearing the most comfortable shoes I have. I still have lots of Braxton Hicks, especially later in the day and at night, but I am used to them now!
Prenatal yoga and walking.
None this week
Week 31 Milestones
This was Thanksgiving week so it was one of our last holidays without baby! We also went on a trip to Michigan over the long weekend, which is our last trip without the baby. I can’t travel any more after the weekend of December 6th, so our next trip we take will be very different! On Saturday, my mom and brother drove up to Detroit to visit my other brother, and Jim and I stayed in New Buffalo. We did some Christmas shopping, and then just relaxed for the almost the whole afternoon. It is very unlike us, but it was really enjoyable, and I realized having the whole day to ourselves is something that will be a distant memory soon!
Our upcoming showers!!
It was fun to see our families over Thanskgiving, and to see our new niece. It makes me so excited for our own newborn soon!
I have so much to be thankful for this year! Here are just a few reasons I feel blessed to have the life that I do.
Obviously this guy is my number one reason I’m thankful! He is my partner and my friend. We have so many fun times together. He has been my rock during some really hard times and I am forever greatful for this. I can’t wait to become a family of three with him in two months and navigate parenting together!
Words can’t even express how thankful I am for my family. Both of our families are wonderful and I feel so lucky that we live so close to both families and are able to spend holidays with everyone. My mom and little brother are two of my best friends and I would be absolutely lost without them.
Most of my friends I met in college and we’ve remained close ever since. Even though we don’t see each other as often as we would like, we pick right back up where we left off every time.
My teaching job is challenging every day, and it can sometimes be quite stressful. I enjoy the challenge and like being kept on my toes. I have an amazing class this year and am so thankful to be in a good school in the city!
Yoga and running
Although I’m on a hiatus from running, I still love it. Yoga has been my go-to workout during pregnancy. The combo of running and yoga keeps me healthy and does wonders for my stress levels. If I didn’t work out I would be a crabby, stressed out lady!
I am thankful to be healthy! It is amazing what your body can do- carry a baby and teach 6 and 7 year olds all day! I am happy that I have had a relatively easy pregnancy and still feel pretty good at 31 weeks preggo! I am beyond thankful I am pregnant! I expected it to be a long journey to getting pregnant and was shocked by how lucky I was that I happened easily.
It sounds silly but these things have been my favorites during pregnancy. Many evenings we would have a glass of wine to end the day, but now I have a sweet treat and some decaf tea. I have eaten a dessert every day of pregnancy. While this sounds crazy, I think it’s all about balance. Sometimes that dessert is a small piece of dark chocolate, and sometimes it is a more decadent dessert. Even a tiny treat makes the day feel happy to me!
I am so glad I started this blog! It has been so fun to get some words out. I hope to increase my posting in the future. I am thankful for my readers who faithfully read all of my posts!!
I hope everyone has a great holiday week and takes a few minutes to be thankful this week!
Baby is the size of a papaya and is between 13-15 inches long. He weighs between 1.5 and 2.2 pounds
Total gained so far: 15 pounds
Week 26- 1 pound
Sleep has been a little rough. I can’t stay comfortable and wake up with my back, hips, and legs hurting a lot. On Friday this week I was so incredibly tired all day. It reminded me of my first trimester. All I could do was count down the hours left until I could go home and lay down. That afternoon I got a slight headache that progressed into a full on migraine by the end of the night. It was the worst headache I’ve ever had and I was a little freaked out. I went to bed early, and woke up feeling fine. I had been pushing myself all week to wake up at 5 (when we normally wake up) even though I was tired so I guess my body was telling me to slow down!
Prenatal yoga and walking. I’m excited to try out a barre class at a studio next week because I really miss the vibe of a studio and group class.
None, but my mom got us a beautiful snowsuit. It is so soft and I can’t wait to put him in it!
I didn’t do a Week 25 update, so I’ll put it in this one. I had failed my glucose test, and had to take a long one last week, but passed it. I was really relieved to have passed!! The 4 hour test consisted of fasting after 10 pm, and going in in the morning to drink the sugary drink again. They took my blood every hour for a total of 4 times to see how my body reacted to the sugar. Afterwards, I ate a snack followed by lunch, because I was starving! It wasn’t that bad, really. My poor arms took a beating, though. I was just happy it was all fine!
I celebrated my birthday this week! There was no wine or going out for drinks for this birthday, and I was totally okay with that! I am so excited that we are three months away from meeting the little guy.
We took a baby class! It was all about labor and delivery. It was definitely a little scary, but necessary, and I feel really prepared for all of the possibilities when we have the baby. We also got to take a tour of the hospital, which was nice to know exactly where we will go, and all of the steps you go through the day you are in labor. The hospital is so nice, and we might even luck out and get a lake view in our room! It made me a little nervous, but more so excited for the big event to be here! We are taking two more before the baby is here- newborn care and infant CPR. I like to be as informed as possible!
Looking forward to:
Next weekend we are painting the nursery, and then setting it up!
My students don’t seem to notice that I’m pregnant. They know I am because I told them at the beginning of the year, but they are in first grade, and it doesn’t seem to phase them. The older kids are more aware of it, and one of my former students said “It looks like you are going to have a baby!” I said, “That’s because I am!” So funny how kids are so honest. A lot of the other kids stare right at my belly when they walk past me. ha!
I can’t believe I’m already 6 months in!
Baby is the size of an eggplant, weighing about a pound and measuring in at about one foot. This picture was from my friend’s rehearsal dinner!
Total gained so far: 12 pounds
Week 24- 0 pounds
I have been feeling pretty good! My back pain is pretty well under control with lots of yoga. I had been having a lot of round ligament pain, but this week it was pretty good, and I was able to go on long walks without having to slow down and wait for the cramping to subside. Unfortunately my sleeping has been absolutely horrible. I woke up 3 mornings in a row before 4:30 with my hips and back hurting, and then never went back to sleep. The lack of sleep has made for some pretty miserable days. I’m hoping to somehow remedy this!
Prenatal yoga, Barre, and walking. My workouts are so much lighter than before pregnancy, and I’m okay with that. I am really excited to get back into hard workouts and running post pregnancy.
We bought a crib this week! I can’t wait to put it together! I also started really researching and registering for things we need. Our goal is to have everything bought and ready to go by the holidays.
Week 24 Milestones
We repainted my old dresser. My parents bought it for me from a garage sale back in my single girl days. Jim and I just repainted it to freshen it up. It’s a perfect height to make a changing station on top, and I also think it is kind of fun to use my old dresser for a new reason!
Unfortunately, a not-so-fun pregnancy milestone this week was my glucose test. I went to the doctor knowing I had to take it, and wasn’t concerned at all. The drink tasted good to me, giving blood doesn’t phase me, and I eat healthy and exercise. I assumed I would pass with flying colors. I was shocked Friday afternoon when the doctor’s office called me and told me I failed. This definitely threw me for a loop. Now I am rethinking everything I have done. Have I not exercised enough? Has my daily dessert had that much of an impact on my health? Am I hurting the baby? I read up a lot on gestational diabetes, and am going to take a 4 hour test on Tuesday to definitively tell if I have gestational diabetes or not. To be continued!
**I took the 4 hour glucose test this week, and I DO NOT have gestational diabetes! Woohoo! I will write more about it in my week 25 post!**
Looking forward to:
Actually starting to buy all of the things we have been researching endlessly like a stroller, car seat, and nursery decor!
Wedding number three of this pregnancy was this weekend! Everyone was so sweet telling me I barely looked pregnant, looked adorable, etc. Definitely good for the ego, when you’re not feeling your best!
